Soffit and Fascia Installation, Replacement and Repair Services
In our repair work, we often find the cause of issues is rotten soffit boards or the wooden timber behind the plastic, which can no longer hold the fixings and screws for the guttering or downpipe support. We are often asked to repair or replace these, and we now offer that as a full install service.
At Gutter Guys, we’re always dedicated to providing reliable, efficient, and affordable soffit and fascia repairs to the Brighton and Hove area and across Sussex. We understand that when it comes to replacements, it’s all about delivering top-notch service without breaking the bank.
That’s why we’re committed to offering cost-effective solutions that don’t compromise on quality, as an alternative to roofing companies. We take pride in our work, ensuring that we replace your soffits, fascias, and bargeboards in a timely and professional manner, so you can rest easy knowing your home (and roofs) are in good hands.

Replacement of soffit and fascia is more than just a cosmetic update; it’s a vital part of maintaining the structural integrity of your home. As your trusted soffit and fascia specialists, we’ve seen first hand the difference that a well-executed soffit and fascia replacement can make and why it should not be ignored.
1. Prevent Water Damage: Soffits and fascia are your home’s first line of defence against water damage. When they’re in good condition, they keep water from seeping into your home and causing costly repairs.
2.Pest Control: These can provide an entry point for pests if not properly maintained. By replacing damaged soffit and fascia, you’re closing off potential entry points for birds and squirrels to nest.
3. Improve Ventilation: Soffits play a key role in ventilating your attic and loft. They help move air in and out, which can reduce the risk of condensation, moisture build-up and mould growth.

Common Soffit and Fascia Problems: How to Spot When Repairs Are Needed
Soffit and fascia are vital components of your home’s roofline and constantly exposed to weather conditions. Identifying the signs that repairs are needed is essential in preventing costly structural damage. Here are common soffit and fascia problems and the signs to watch out for:
- Water Damage and Mould Growth:
Water stains, mould, or mildew along the roofline signal that water is getting through. This could result from clogged gutters, which overflow and damage the soffit and fascia, or from the gradual deterioration of these materials. If unchecked, this can lead to water damage in the attic and walls. - Sagging or Loose Fascia:
Moisture, extreme weather, or improper installation can cause fascia boards to sag or detach. Look for gaps or visible sagging. A sagging fascia can disrupt gutter function, causing water overflow. - Cracks, Holes, or Rot:
Wooden soffit and fascia may develop cracks or rot due to constant exposure to moisture. If you notice visible damage, such as cracking or pieces of fascia falling off, the material is weakening and may need replacing. - Pest Infestation:
Gaps in the soffit or fascia can allow pests such as birds, rodents, or insects to enter. Look for droppings, visible nests, or holes that pests may use to infiltrate your home. - Discolouration or Peeling Paint:
While not an urgent concern, peeling or discoloured paint indicates exposure to the elements, which can lead to long-term damage if left untreated. - Flashing Issues:
Flashing around the roofline and where the fascia meets the roof may become damaged, allowing water to seep behind it, leading to leaks and water damage. - Gutter Problems:
Fascia damage can misalign gutters, causing overflow and blockages. Ensure your gutters are functioning properly to avoid further soffit and fascia damage.

How often do homeowners have to repair soffits?
Generally, soffits can last for several decades if properly installed and maintained, although if your house is exposed to wind and rain you may find you need to replace or repair sooner.
It is recommended to inspect your soffit regularly for any signs of damage, wear, or deterioration. If you notice issues such as rot, cracks, or pest infestations, it may be necessary to replace the soffit sooner.
In the UK often the soffits and fascias are made from wood, so high exposure to excessive weather conditions can cause issues with your guttering if it is attached, which is essential for water runoff from the roofing. Newly built houses should have UPVC soffits and fascias as they are non-absorbent.
It may be possible that some DIY soffit repair may work and just needs resealing, but any water absorption can cause damp issues so please bear this in mind. If the board is absorbing water, at some point fascia or soffit replacement will be needed.
How often do you have to replace your fascias?
Again the frequency of replacing fascia boards can vary depending on several factors, including the type of material used, the climate conditions in your area, and the level of maintenance provided. Bad storm damage can make a mockery of any estimation.
Generally, well-maintained fascia boards can last anywhere from 20 to 30 years. However, if the boards are exposed to extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain or prolonged sun exposure, they may deteriorate more quickly and require replacement sooner. And if you have UPVC gutters attached, they will weigh less than cast iron guttering, the latter a heavier weight pulling on the board.
Regular inspections and maintenance can help identify any signs of damage or decay early on, allowing for timely repairs or replacements as needed.
This is crucial when it comes to guttering which is often attached to the fascia board. It has to have strength to support the gutter during heavy rainfall, and if often the cause of leaks from gutters that are coming away from the property.
Do you need to use scaffolding to repair a soffit or facia board?
It may be possible to do this using only a ladder, but it depends on the height and style of the property, access and amount of damage. Obviously a bungalow is easier to work on than a 3 storey house or block of flats. Using a cherry picker is also an option, but in some we would need to hold up and fix large bargeboards to the gable which might only be possible with scaffolding.

What is the difference between Soffit and Fascia New Install and Replacement?
A new install is when there is nothing there currently, and a replacement is putting brand new soffit and fascia boards up.
Regardless of what you call it though, we will be happy to discuss your needs. We’d suggest you use our quote form and send us images of your property and we should be able to give advice and direction on what is needed.

What is a fascia board on a house?
A fascia board is a long, horizontal board that is typically mounted on the edge of a roofline on a house. It is located just below the roofline and runs horizontally along the eaves of the house. The fascia board is usually made of wood, PVC, or composite materials, and its primary function is to protect the roof and the interior of the house by providing a barrier between the edge of the roof and the elements. It also serves as a finishing touch, covering the ends of the roof rafters and creating a clean, finished look to the exterior of the house.
What is a soffit?
A soffit is a term used in architecture to refer to the underside of a building element such as an arch, beam, or eave. It is often a horizontal or slightly sloping surface that covers and protects the underside of a roof overhang, a porch roof, or the underside of a staircase. Soffits can be made from various materials such as wood, plywood, aluminium, vinyl, or fibre cement. They serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, providing ventilation, hiding structural elements, and enhancing the overall appearance of a building.

What is involved in a fascia installation process?
A fascia installation process typically involves the following steps:
01
Preparation:
The first step is to prepare the area where the fascia will be installed. This may involve removing the existing timber fascia or any damaged materials.
02
Measurement and Cutting:
Accurate measurements are taken to ensure the fascia fits properly. The fascia boards are then cut to the appropriate size using a saw or other cutting tools.
03
Installation of Soffit:
If necessary, soffit panels are installed first. Soffit is the material that covers the underside of the overhang, providing ventilation and a finished appearance.
04
Attaching Fascia Boards:
The fascia boards are then attached to the rafters or roof trusses using nails, screws, or other appropriate fasteners. They are typically installed horizontally along the edge of the roof.
05
Sealing and Painting:
Once the fascia boards are securely in place, any gaps or joints are sealed to prevent water penetration, with sealant better than caulking. The fascia is then painted or stained to match the desired aesthetic of the building.
06
Finishing Touches:
Finally, any necessary finishing touches are added, such as adding trim or decorative elements to enhance the appearance of the fascia.
What is involved in a soffit installation?
The process of installing a soffit typically involves the following steps:
01
Installation of J-channel:
Begin by installing the J-channel along the perimeter of the area where the soffit will be placed. The J-channel provides a secure base for the soffit panels to be installed.
02
Cutting the soffit panels:
Measure and cut the soffit panels to fit the length of the area. Use a saw to make clean, accurate cuts.
03
Attaching the soffit panels:
Start by inserting the first soffit panel into the J-channel. Make sure it is level and secure it in place using nails or screws. Continue installing the remaining panels, ensuring they are properly aligned and spaced.
04
Adding trim pieces:
Install any necessary trim pieces, such as corner caps or fascia covers, to provide a finished look and protect the edges of the soffit.
05
Finishing touches:
Once all the panels and trim pieces are in place, check for any gaps or unevenness. Make any necessary adjustments and secure any loose components.
